---Knoxville Campaign: In the face of
approaching Union reinforcements in the shape of Sherman and his corps coming
up from Chattanooga, Lt. Gen. James Longstreet calls off the siege of Knoxville
and begins to retreat eastward in the fastness of the Tennessee Appalachian
wilderness.
