Jan. 23, 1862

Jan. 23, 1862: In St. Louis, Gen. Halleck of the U.S. Army issues orders, the city being under martial law, to seize the property of certain prominent Secessionist citizens, in order to provide for the needs of refugees who were driven out of southwestern Missouri by the Confederates.

–At the mouth of the Mississippi River, U.S. blockade ships fight and capture the CSN ship Calhoun. Later in the day, two more Rebel ships making a sortie from the delta are run aground by pursuing Yankee ships.
