---Believing that Gen. Sherman's expedition into central Mississippi is actually aimed at taking Mobile, Gen. Polk puts his Confederate forces in motion, and diverts two brigades meant to reinforce Loring down to Mobile, instead. Polk has Loring and French with their divisions at Morton, ready to receive Sherman's two corps, and the Rebels are badly outnumbered, and would have benefitted by the two additional brigades. Gen. Loring therefore has his men build big campfires, and he orders his division and that of Samual French to disappear into the night, and retreat to Newton, some 30 miles farther east—at a point 2/3 of the distance from Jackson to Meridian.

---In Monroe, Michigan, Brig. Gen. George Armstrong Custer, USA, marries Elizabeth Bacon.
