November 14, 1863

---General Ulysses S. Grant writes to Burnside in Knoxville, asking him not to retreat from that city (as Burnside apparently was considering), but to hold out against any moves Longstreet might make in order that Grant might be able to attack a reduced Bragg when he was ready to move forward against the Confederate siege of Chattanooga.
