Jan. 10, 1862

Jan. 10, 1862: Flag Office Louis M. Goldsborough, U.S. Navy, readies his fleet for departure from Fort Monroe in Hampton Roads.

–Gen. Lander, having fallen back on Romney, has requested reinforcements. Doubting that he will get any, he abandons Romney and falls back on Cumberland, Maryland. Stonewall Jackson’s troops, battered and frostbitten, occupy Romney and make a miserable winter camps there.

–Pres. Lincoln remarks to some members of his Cabinet that "if General McClellan does not want to use the army, I would like to borrow it, provided I can see how it can be made to do something.
